John MacKenzie

I am working on a biography of this early cameraman. A native of Inverness, MacKenzie is today almost forgotten as a pioneer Scottish filmmaker, but in the early 1900s he was probably the leading non-fiction cameraman in the world. He worked for the London-based Charles Urban company for many years, travelling throughout the world to film a wide variety of scenes, and then emigrated to America in the early teen years where he continued as a cameraman, and two of his sons followed him into the same business.
I have been tracing the life of 'Mac' for many years, and have found articles about and by him especially in the film trade press. Also I unearthed the then only surviving copy of his autobiographical work, Rambles in Many Lands (1910) in the National Library of Scotland. Eventually I plan to write a biography of Mac.
Some time ago, I posted a query on a genealogical website and received a wealth of responses which have filled in details about his family, his move to the USA, and other dates in his life. See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=405685.new;topicseen#new
More recently the website British Newspaper Archive has revealed much more about his pre-cameraman life. I have also obtained some information through his family.
As a taster, this article is from Moving Picture World, 9th October 1915.
